Nothing Exceeds Like Excess
Grand Ayatollah Issues Fatwa Condemning Khameni and His Entire Regime

A fatwā (Arabic: فتوى‎; plural fatāwā Arabic: فتاوى‎), in the Islamic faith is a religious opinion concerning Islamic law issued by an Islamic scholar. In Sunni Islam any fatwa is non-binding, whereas in Shia Islam it could be binding, depending on the status of the scholar. Western media frequently uses the term incorrectly to specifically mean an Islamic law pronouncing a death sentence upon someone who is considered an infidel or a blasphemer, whereas the term's correct definition is significantly broader.[1] Fatwā cover social and political issues and jihad. If a fatwā does not break new ground, then it is simply called a ruling.[2]

Iran is a Shi'ite country, and this fatwa was endorsed by the entire community of scholars in Qom, which means that this condemnation of the current government and regime as anathema is, in fact, binding.

This Friday, the Ayatollah Rafsanjani is leading the Friday Prayers for the first time since the election. He will be joined by Mousavi and the Sea of Green as a whole. The fact that they feel safe enough to appear in public this way says a great deal about the widening rift in the government and the increasing support of the clerics.

This is the build up to July 30, which is the Day of the Martyrs in the 40 day mourning cycle of Islam. That is the day when we see how much control Khameni and company still have. When the country comes out in force to mourn the death of Neda and the other protesters murdered by the regime, we will see how strong the forces for reform and freedom truly are.

Fuckin-a yeah.
I've been thinking about this, and I think this sounds most like a supreme court ruling, without there being a case.

They still need the army.

There's some interesting new stuff here:

As to the army...the IRG is firmly in Khameni's pocket, but is a relatively small force. The actual army has stated they will take no stand and no action in events occurring within the country. Khameni tried to order them out weeks ago, but their commander refused the orders. He has since been forced out, but Khameni doesn't dare try again because he can't risk them turning on him.

So...the army isn't with the reformers, but isn't against them either, which may be all they need.

Ever since the religious authorities of Qom spoke for Mousavi, this has been a waiting game...more and more clerics and officials are joining Mousavi. I think it's just a matter of time til the scales are tipped so far that Khameni and Ahmadouchebag will fall...hard.
*fingers crossed*

I know, I'm in it. I missed a few official threads, but for the most part there hasn't been one that I haven't at least perused, if not "contributed" to.
I don't know about them winning without the army moving, though. I disagree with the ITGs who say the kids in the streets should "take up arms" or whatever, but I also don't think that the other cheek can work as a long term strategy. Obviously the RG and the Basij are going to be around as long as Khameni in the former case and cash in the latter case. Maybe they can run him out of money. They said the boycott was making advertisers nervous.
Aside: Is ISNA in the state's pocket? I got the impression that it is.

ISNA? Iranian Student News Assoc.?

Ah, I wasn't sure if you'd arrived here in my wacky little world from Fark or from the these posts. Who are you on Fark?

(And "Hi!" And "Welcome!")

Most awesome. This is very good news. :)

No, it's not really a Supreme Court ruling at all. There is a judicial system in Iran, and these guys aren't it. But it is still a veeerry interesting development.

I think he was saying it carries the same sort of emotional weight as a Supreme Court ruling...

Interesting stuff, either way.

Wow. A fatwa is some serious stuff.

The MSM just isn't covering this. They've decided it's over, so they're reporting it as if it were. I guess because it takes time away from all those hours of reportage on how Michael Jackson is still dead.

I wrote a post last week about the MSM and their collective failure in their mandate, and got an email from a friend saying that Iran isn't news, and that it's perfectly okay for MSM to spend weeks covering the death of a washed-up, has-been musician and pedophile.

It's great to be an American in the 21st century. *sigh*

(Did you get my email last week? Several of my emails have apparently disappeared into the ether of late, not sure what's up with Yahoo...)

I took a break from email over the weekend and worked instead (revision number two ate my brain; needed to get the neurons back). Getting to it now (and working backwards), but (checking) yours is definitely in the Inbox.
