Nothing Exceeds Like Excess
AT&T Blocks 4Chan. Yeah, that's gonna work out well for 'em

wtf
Here's the article:

http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/07/26/att-blocks-4chan-this-is-going-to-get-ugly/

http://www.centralgadget.com/att-blocking-access-to-portions-of-4chan-2336/

/b/ has already dedicated a website to plans on how to react to this situation.

To me, this is really interesting because of the implications of internet censorship and free speech. Tomorrow should be...educational.

Update (8:45 PM 7/26): After over an hour of trying, we finally got someone from AT&T corporate to provide a statement. AT&T has confirmed that they are “currently blocking portions of the internet site 4chan.org”, but states that they are “following the practices of their policy department.”

AT&T went on to say that they did contact (or, at least, attempted to contact, they wouldn’t clarify) the owners of 4chan. They say that they have specific reasons why they blocked these parts of the site, but they would not disclose them to CentralGadget.com. AT&T states that they have requested specific things and changes from 4chan’s owners, and that 4chan has not complied.

Regardless, without a clear explanation of specific rationale for blocking 4chan… both 4chan and CentralGadget.com encourage you to continue calling AT&T technical support, and filing your complaints there (escalate as high as possible, we have heard reports that Tier 1 support agents are being told to incorrectly state that AT&T doesn’t block any web site).

Update (9 PM 7/26): Moot, the owner of 4chan, has stated that 4chan has received no contact from AT&T, calling into question if AT&T followed their own protocol when blocking 4chan.

Update (11:15 PM 7/26): AT&T appears to have restored access network-wide to all areas of 4chan.

Update (12:30 AM 7/27): 4chan is currently down, due to a large DDOS attack, affecting most of 4chan’s servers. This appears unrelated to the AT&T blockade, but may have been triggered by the high-profile attention that 4chan has received, over the past 24 hours.

Ahahahahahaha! I laugh, because I can only image the wank that is ensuing. I <3 4chan and the crazy-ass crap that comes from there. I do not love ATT even moreso for this stupidity.

I'm just boggled by the whole thing...who the hell at AT&T thought this was a good idea?

Seriously, these are the last people on earth you want to fuck with. I'd rather roll around in raw meat then dive into a wolverine pack...

And apparently, AT&T has apparently already decided to lift the block, but now 4chan is down due to an unrelated DDoS. I am shocked, let me tell you.

4chan itself is down, but it has a few subsidiary sites, and plans for action are proceeding.

AT&T backed down, but that ain't gonna save 'em. Fun times ahead...

Yes, because nothing is more important than proving to the world what a bully you are, time and time again.

In this case, I'd say that the giant mega-corporation trying to censor the internet is the bully here.

I've never been a huge fan of /b/, however:
1)internet censorship is a big issue, and would be bad for everyone. To me, it's not that they blocked /b/, but that they seem to think it's okay to decide what their subscribers (many of whom have no other options for internet due to location) are allowed to see

2)/b/ has been instrumental in getting the info out of Iran by setting up proxies and tor bridges and making sure the truth is too widespread for the Iranian gov't to successfully hide it

The Anon Iran site http://iran.whyweprotest.net/ has become one of the best sources for news and practical ideas on how to help the protesters. No DDOSing, no lolcats, just good and effective advice.

More power to 'em, I say, and if the other /b/tards want to rickroll the Ayatollahs and whatever, fine. The minority will always be morons, but in this instance the majory of channers have stepped up and done great things.

CP.

That is all.
27th-Jul-2009 07:27 pm (UTC)
The official stance is no CP. It is removed by mods whenever it's posted.

The actions of a stupid minority don't invalidate the accomplishments of the others.

There are bad apples in every barrel. Sturgeon's Law is true more often than not, but that's no reason to throw out the other 10%.
27th-Jul-2009 07:38 pm (UTC)
I know what the official stance is, but it still gets through on at least a semi-regular basis, and I think that alone is a valid reason for any ISP to block /b/.
27th-Jul-2009 07:48 pm (UTC)
Okay, for the sake of argument...if they have the right/duty to block /b/ because of CP, then they have a legal obligation to block all other sites purveying CP and everything else that is illegal...freeware sites, downloading sites, etc. They'd have to block facebook. Myspace. Youtube. Any dating site that doesn't verify ages. All of it.

When they ignore all of that and just block one site, that's persecution. By their own bylaws, they must block nothing or everything illegal on the net.

All of that being said, the reason they blocked it was excessive use of bandwidth, not content.
27th-Jul-2009 01:06 pm (UTC)
Wow, backed down already. That was impressively fast.
27th-Jul-2009 04:25 pm (UTC)
4chan is apparently not planning to forgive and forget, however.
AT&T would have been far smarter to just leave 'em alone...they're still in for a world of hurt.
27th-Jul-2009 10:53 pm (UTC)
Then 4chan is being dumb. AT&T backed down, declare victory and leave it at that. If they torment AT&T after having won, why wouldn't they get blocked again - I mean, if backing down doesn't have any effect on a 4chan "attack", what's to be lost by blocking them again?
28th-Jul-2009 12:42 am (UTC)
That would, of course, be the sane and rational approach...but this is /b/ we're talking about. Sane and rational aren't in their vocabulary...
